After some initial work at the studio, it’s become apparent that I needed to take my home audio gear to the “next level” to get the polished sound I’m after. Up to this point I’ve been using Sure SM57 and SM58 BETA microphones through an m-audio box. With some honest budget conversations and sage guidance from the masterful Chris, I have now integrated a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 interface, Radial J48 Active Direct Box, and a pair of Avotone condensor mics. There are the mics…110 degrees apart.
What all this means or the implications of it all, I have yet to find out. All I can say at this point is that I’ve got a bunch of new gear, some great bargaining techniques with everyone’s favorite instrument/audio store, and a lot to learn. It’s actually exciting to bring in some fancier gear. It’s like eating hot dogs for dinner for years, then upgrading to organic, humanely handled chicken meat fresh off grandma’s farm. At least that’s the hope.
There’s the new interface and DI, snuggling up.
So it’s back to the start for now, but with so much more knowledge, preparation, confidence, and a little less money. So glad I have a job! Beginner’s mind. Beginner’s mind. Here we go!
